In Julie Flandorfer’s artwork, she strives to understand the relationship between people and nature, and often the unnatural world that we’ve created. Flandorfer paints imagined scenes that are often quirky and awkward based on her memories of growing up in the country and in a small town. Her use of pop culture references, 20th century advertising motifs combined with snippets of nature show the many layers of memories we all have. Her bold colors and patterns aim to pull the viewer in, to spark a memory from their own past. Flandorfer’s paintings emphasize the beauty of life, be it humanoid or nature related, in all its awkwardness, complications and challenges.

“I’m especially inspired by vintage advertising and books; marbled endpapers and mid-century illustrations are so cool!”
